Tsukiji: the end of an era

Tsukiji market
Tsukiji market

The market of all the markets, the largest fish market in the world is coming to the end. Or at least in the form how we know it. On November 7th 2016 Tsukiji market will officially open in its new location, where tourists will be no longer allowed to browse around the stalls. Tokyo based seafood broker Ken Banwell once described Tsukiji as an “organized chaos” and it’s the end of that chaos. From now on, everyone will need to take a monorail to get there and all the hygiene standards will comply to international regulations. From what one can see in the very last pictures of this post, visitors will be able to observe the market from behind the glass. What is sad that it’s not only the end of an era, that was started by shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu in the 16th century, but also many smaller vendors won’t be able to afford moving to the new location in Toyosu.

Some images from my last visit at Tsukiji. Thanks Yukari Sakamoto for once again bringing me there.
