WD-50,the prize for "mediocre"

I hate to write this  review about WD-50, because the people working there were some of the nicest and the most hospitable in NY and generally i try to avoid negative reviews.But my dinner in WD-50 last night could win the prize of the worse dinner of 2007 and I am also very surprised that some people consider that WD-50 is a good restaurant. So I thought i am entitled to my opinion as well...

OK, you can say, that the cooking of Wylie Dufresne is "expermental",he is a "mad scientist" who doesn't  have to be understood by everybody. But in my humble opinion  knowing how to cook and intelligent marriage of tastes and products should go before "art " and "creativity". Moreover, i didn't see the cooking at WD-50 that expermental. The only thing that was prepared in the "molecular way" was the mole lentiles that came with my foie gras.And I couldn't have guessed that if i didn't ask the waitress...

My entrée was the dish in the picture above. "Foie gras, mole lentils, quince yogurt  .... " The foie gras was very average and still had some nerves in it. The mole lentils were absolutely tasteless. The only good thing about this dish was the "gros sel" that was sprinkled over the foie gras... I liked the idea of quince yogurt with foie gras also.

My friend had "fried quail, banana tartar, nasturtium  ....The mixture of fried quail and banana was less than inspiring...



For the main dish my friend had "Wagyu flat iron, coffee gnocchi, coconut, cipollini, sylvetta  .... " . The  Kobe beef was ok, but  not  as good as kobe beef could be.
My dish in the picture below was turbot with lentils( normal ones) and covered in something i don't remember what. Usually turbot is my favorite fish, but this one was overcooked and tasteless.The lentils (simply cooked) were good though, but as you might expect, very ordinary.

As for  the desserts  i must agree with Alex from Blind Tasting Club . They did stand out of all the rest and thanks to my dessert i didn't leave WD-50 still hungry... My dessert was very good. "Toasted coconut cake, carob, smoked hazelnut, brown butter sorbet..." I loved everything in it, especially the smoked hazelnut.

The other dessert we had, "grapefruit custard, elderflower,blueberry, basil", was worse than the toasted coconut cake... The problem of this dessert was the custard- as you couldn't feel the grapefruit in it, it was just custard without any character... So i guess, even the desserts of WD-50 lacked consistency..
